What is an Internally Heated Air Dryer?

An Internally Heated Air Dryer is a twin tower desiccant type dryer which uses heat and a small amount of dry purge air for regeneration. Heatless dryers will typically use 15-20% of purge air, where an Internally Heated Dryer will only utilize 5-7% of that dry purge air thereby reducing operating costs.

As the dry purge air travels into the regeneration tower, electric heaters internal to the tower heat that dry purge air, which improves the desiccant regeneration efficiency and reduces the amount of purge air needed for regeneration. This is what makes it a very energy efficient dryer while also providing you with a dew point as low as -40C to -60C depending on model and application.

Working Principle of Internally Heated Air Dryer

  • Adsorption Phase: Compressed air enters the online tower using activated alumina or molecular sieve desiccant. Therefore, moisture is absorbed and dry air exits for use.
  • Regeneration Phase: The offline tower has an electric heater that warms a small amount of dry purge air that will pass through the desiccant for moisture removal (the moisture that is adsorbed) from the desiccant material.
  • Cooling & Depressurization: The offline tower is then cooled in preparation for the cycle switch, using the dry air, for cooldown before switching cycles to avoid thermal shock and spikes in the dew point.
  • Cycle Switching: The automatic switch of the online and offline towers can be achieved using a timer or PLC control, and the automatic switch will help maintain continuous drying without interruption.
